Garbage Compactor Fire Forces Port Authority Evacuation

The bus terminal was evacuated because of the smoke.

A busy bus terminal in Midtown Manhattan was partially evacuated during the evening rush hours because of smoke caused by a fire in a trash compactor.

Officials said commuters at the Port Authority Bus Terminal's north wing were told to leave after smoke billowed through the building blocks from Times Square.

The Fire Department of New York said a fire in a garage was called in about 4:25 p.m. A fire was found in a compactor, causing the smoke.

About 60 firefighters were laboring to bring the blaze under control about 6 p.m.

The Port Authority said there was no disruption in bus service.
