NJ Police Sergeant Accused of Sexual Assault While on Duty

Authorities say Samuel Woody has been suspended from the force pending the outcome of the investigation.

A New Jersey police sergeant has been arrested on a sexual assault charge and suspended from the force pending the outcome of a criminal investigation, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Samuel Woody, a 12-year member of the Plainfield Police Department, was arrested Tuesday evening and charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, authorities said. It wasn't known if he had an attorney.

Authorities say Woody was on duty and in uniform at the time of the alleged assault on July 24. The incident was reported to authorities on January 11.

Police arrested Woody after a joint investigation by Internal Affairs and the Union County Prosecutor's Office.

The 41-year-old officer was released from custody after posting bail.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and urge anyone with information to contact Prosecutor's Office Lt. James Russo at 908-527-4619 or Lt. Jose Ila of the Plainfield Police Internal Affairs at 908-753-3050.
