NYPD Officer Hit by Van While Chasing Escaped Prisoner

Patti McConville

A police officer was hit by a van on Park Avenue as he was chasing a suspect who had escaped from custody early Wednesday afternoon, authorities say.

The officer was struck by the commuter van near East 120th Street, a block from the precinct, after the prisoner jumped out of a van. He had head and neck injuries but was said to be OK.

Authorities say the officer was taking the prisoner to Manhattan Central Booking. It was not immediately clear how the prisoner escaped.

The prisoner was captured nearby.
