Mom Held Up Baby in Bid to Avoid Arrest at Party: Police

Authorities say a mother held up her 9-month-old child in an attempt to keep police from arresting her at a noisy house party.

North Plainfield police say Stephany Bernal faces several charges, including child endangerment and aggravated assault on a police officer.

A telephone number for the 24-year-old Berkeley Heights resident couldn't be located Monday. It wasn't clear if she has an attorney.

Bernal was one of several guests at the party held Saturday night.

Police initially went to the home after getting a complaint about loud music, and the music was turned down. But police returned to the home on a similar complaint, and authorities say the crowd of roughly 40 people started to get unruly when officers tried to issue a summons for a noise ordinance violation.
