Off-Duty Jersey City Police Officer Shoots, Kills 2 During Attempted Robbery: Officials

An off-duty Jersey City police officer shot and killed two people in Newark, officials say.

The deadly double shooting on South Sixth Street just before midnight came as officers were responding to an attempted robbery. The circumstances that led the officer to pull their trigger on the would-be robbers weren't immediately known. 

The names of the officer and the two people who died have not been released.

Detectives were seen shining flashlights in the area where the gunfire rang out just before midnight. Detectives were see placing evidence markers on the ground, video from the scene shows. Two weapons were recovered at the scene, sources said. 

The prosecutor's office and the medical examiner were at the scene early Monday. 

The area was closed off to traffic as police investigated.
