A 23-year-old man was shot three times by police after allegedly lunging at officers with a knife in Brooklyn Wednesday, officials said.
The NYPD said that the officers were responding to Remsen and Ralph avenues when they encountered a knife-wielding Davonte Pressley around 11 a.m. The cops ordered Pressley several times to drop the weapon, police said.
Instead, Pressley allegedly lunged at the officers. One of the cops opened fire, striking him three times in the torso.
Pressley was taken to a hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive. Investigators say they recovered a knife from the scene.
Neighbors said they were surprised by the confrontation. Peggy Hernandez said she had seen Pressley often walked by her furniture store smoking cigarettes.
"He's never rude, he says 'hello' to me in passing, so I don't understand how the situation went the way it did," she said.
The shooting scene was across from a school, and teachers told NBC 4 New York that they heard gunshots.

Pressley was charged Thursday with two counts of attempted assault on a police officer, attempted menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.
