Officer Shot Man Who Held Knife to Woman's Neck: NYPD

An NYPD officer shot a man three times in the chest after police say they found the suspect pressing a knife to a woman's throat inside a Lower East Side building and unsuccessfully tried to subdue him with a stun gun early Tuesday.

Officers  responded to a building on Madison Street at about 12:15 a.m. after getting a call about a man threatening a woman, according to the NYPD. While standing outside a door, the officer heard the woman scream that a man was stabbing her.

The officers broke down the door after hearing the woman's cry and allegedly found the man with a knife to the woman's throat. The officers tried to use a stun gun to subdue the man but were unsuccessful.

The officer fired five shots at the suspect when he allegedly began to cut the woman, police say. Three bullets hit the man in the chest. It's not clear if anyone else was hit.

The suspect was taken to the hospital after the shooting and is in critical but stable condition, police say. The FDNY says another person was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition, and a third suspect was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

An officer was being treated for ringing in the ears, police said.
