Police Halt Suicide Attempt on George Washington Bridge

Police foiled a man's attempt to jump off the George Washington Bridge in northern New Jersey, authorities said Saturday.

Officers from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey responded to the scene Friday afternoon after the man called a suicide prevention hotline, using a phone on the bridge's walkway. A counselor alerted police, who soon found the man unharmed.

The man, identified only as a Brooklyn resident, was taken to a hospital for observation.

Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo said it was the sixth time this month that officers have foiled a would-be suicide at the bridge. It also marked the 72nd such intervention this year, a 95 percent increase since 2013.

Eighteen people have committed suicide at the span this year.
