2 Cops Among 8 Hurt in Brooklyn Crash After Car Blows Red Light, Speeds Off: Police

The officers were in an unmarked car

Two NYPD officers were among the eight people taken to the hospital after an unmarked police car trailing a vehicle that ran a red light was involved in a three-car crash in Brooklyn early Wednesday, authorities say.

Police say a black Nissan Altima that fit the description of a car authorities are investigating as potentially being involved in a hit-and-run ran a red light near Atlantic and Van Siclen avenues around 2:30 a.m.

The officers started following the Nissan, and it began speeding down Atlantic Avenue, police said.

The speeding Nissan then slammed into a BMW, and the police car that had been tailing the Nissan rammed into it. Five people were in the BMW, and they were all taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The officers were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the black Nissan that police say initially ran the red light is in police custody at the hospital. That person is also expected to be OK.

Charges against the driver are pending, police said.
