Pennsylvania Wife-Killer Sentenced Another 20 Years in Cold Case Killing of Teen Runaway Found in Bronx Gutter

The girl, Marleny Cruz, was found dead in a gutter on Valentine Avenue on Feb. 23, 1998, according to authorities

A Pennsylvania man incarcerated in the murder of his wife has been sentenced to another 20 years in the cold case murder and rape of a 14-year-old girl found dead in a gutter in the Bronx in 1998.

James Martin was already imprisoned in the 2005 murder of his wife in Pennsylvania when the NYPD Cold Case Bureau reopened its investigation into Marley Cruz, a runaway from a group foster home who was found dead on Valentine Avenue on Feb. 23, 1998.

She had been strangled, authorities said, and investigators were not able to be identify her until April 1998, through dental records.

Evidence collected from the sexual assault kit was re-examined, and technology advances allowed forensic experts to pull a full DNA profile, which was loaded into a database. The DNA matched that of Martin.

Martin pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, and a judge Tuesday ordered his 20-year sentence to begin after the completion of his Pennsylvania prison term. When asked if he had anything to say, Martin said no.
