A man is in police custody after allegedly driving into two people, running one of them over twice, in the Bronx following a memorial gathering, authorities and witnesses said.

A witness told police that about 50 people crowded near Avenue St. John and Timpson Place once the memorial ended just before 1:15 a.m. The service was being held for a victim of violence who lived in the neighborhood and died two years ago.

Some people who had attended the service got into a fight between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m., authorities said. One person left, got into a car and drove away.

Witnesses say the driver hit two people who had been part of the memorial. One of the victims managed to get up and escape further harm. Witnesses said the driver put the car in reverse and ran over the other victim a second time. That man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 26.

Police said it is "possible" the driver in custody would face charges, but would not elaborate. They only confirmed he was in custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
