NJ Town Adopts Curfew for Businesses in High-Crime Areas

A New Jersey town has opted to impose a curfew on businesses operating in high-crime areas, according to a published report.

The City Council in Paterson adopted the new municipal ordinance Tuesday, which requires commercial establishments in 15 designated crime zones to close by midnight, reports NorthJersey.com.

Paterson police identified the high crime zones by analyzing complaints about drug and street gang activity, non-fatal shootings and noise complaints, the website reported.

Business owners complained at a hearing Tuesday night that the ordinance would deprive them of revenue, potentially forcing them to cut jobs, while residents pleaded for action in the crime-riddled city.

The ordinance passed by a vote of 8-1, with only City Council President Julio Tavarez voting against it, reports NorthJersey.com.
