A parking attendant was killed late Thursday when he crashed an SUV into a metal vehicle elevator inside a midtown garage.

Police say the 64-year-old worker, identified as Denuld Prophete, had gone to retrieve a Ford Explorer at the garage on West 44th Street.

When he got out of the SUV, he accidentally left it in reverse, police said. The car then began to roll backward, and Prophete jumped back into the car.

Instead of hitting the brake, he pressed the accelerator. The car then crashed into the metal car elevator.

    He suffered severe head trauma.
