An off-duty New York City Police officer vacationing in Miami Beach has been shot.

Miami Beach Police Detective Vivian Hernandez says the shooting happened at about 7 a.m. Saturday in a corridor at an apartment-hotel style building.

Investigators say the officer was involved in some sort of altercation in which shorts were fired and he was injured.

Details on what exactly transpired during the confrontation were not available. The officer has not been identified.

No arrests have been made and Hernandez says suspects are at large.

The officer was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery. His condition was not immediately known.

Hernandez says the shooting was not work-related in any way.
