An off-duty NYPD officer was shot in a domestic dispute in New Jersey late Friday night, neighbors and witnesses said.
The officer works out of the 63rd Precinct in Brooklyn, police said.
Police would not confirm the circumstances surrounding the incident, but a man who lives next door to the home in Monmouth County where the officer was shot, told NBC 4 New York that the officer was caught up in a love triangle.
According to the neighbor, the unidentified officer was in the Manalapan home of a woman, when her estranged husband came home and allegedly fired at the officer.
The 15-year NYPD veteran suffered non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital Saturday, officials said.
Police are still searching for the gunman, who has been identified as 35-year-old Robert Dunbar of Staten Island. The Monmouth County prosecutor's office has charged Dunbar with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and criminal possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
A warrant has been issued for Dunbar's arrest.
On Sunday, Dunbar's brother Danny Dunbar told NBC 4 New York that his brother was not a dangerous man.
"He's not someone that needs a manhunt," Dunbar said. "He's a family man, he's a father. He's a hardworking guy who came home to an unfortunate situation and I'm sure he either had to defend himself or took whatever means he took necessary."
