Teen Yeshiva Student Killed, Another Hurt After Being Hit by Officer Heading To Work: Officials

A 17-year-old Argentinian boy was killed when he and a friend were both hit by an police officer headed to work on a suburban road in the lower Hudson Valley late on Wednesday, authorities said.

Marcos Tawil and a friend were both struck by the off-duty Peekskill police officer in front of the Yeshivat Tiferet Tora on Haverstraw Road in Ramapo, according to authorities.

Authorities said that the officer was headed to work in his personal vehicle and had crossed into oncoming traffic to try to pass another vehicle. The cars then sideswiped one another, and the officers car careened into the two teens.

Tawil, who had traveled to New York to study at the yeshiva, was killed. His friend, 19-year-old David Maldonado, was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

"They were going out, they have their phones out too," said Bionah Mishli, one of Tawil's friends. "They were definitely visible, but this is a dangerous road.

Tawil's father traveled from Argentina to take his son back to his home country to be buried.

Neither driver was hurt, and authorities haven't charged anyone with a crime.
