Newark Teen Killed in Stolen Car Chase

Other occupants of stolen vehicles remain on loose

A Newark teenager was killed when he crashed a stolen car he was driving during a police chase Sunday, authorities said.

Deyshawn Grimes, 15, allegedly stole a 2003 Jeep Liberty  from nearby Kearny, N.J., and was driving behind another car, also apparently stolen by people he knew, from East Orange.

A witness saw Grimes bump the vehicle he was driving into the second stolen car at a traffic light in Kearny, and saw the young occupants laughing and yelling at each other, officials said.

The witness flagged down a passing East Newark patrol car, and the police officers made a U-turn to investigate. The young drivers of the stolen vehicles sped across the bridge.

Grimes struck a concrete barrier at Route 21 and Bridge Street after crossing the bridge into Newark from Harrison and crashed, according to officials. The other stolen vehicle also crashed in the same area, but its occupants fled the scene and were not captured.

Grimes was pronounced dead at the scene.
