Jersey Shootings Leave 1 Dead, 1 Injured

A sixteen-year-old boy has died and a fifteen-year-old was injured during a shootout last night in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

The shootout happened in front of a grocery store on the corner of Anna and Henry streets, a popular hangout for local teens.  Witnesses say they heard multiple shots shortly before 10 pm last night.  Witnesses told NBCNewYork that those responsible ran off as soon as the shots were fired.

The sixteen-year-old, Juan "John" Davis, was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth, according to Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.  Fifteen-year-old Jaquan Manning was brought to University Hospital for a bullet wound in the ankle. He is now in stable condition and is set to undergo surgery, Romankow said in a press release.

This morning, friends of Juan gathered to mark the spot where he fell with teddy bears. Investigators, too, are at the scene; the Union County Homicide Task Force, Sheriff's Department, and Elizabeth Police are investigating, Romankow said.

The area is no stranger to violence; a neighbor told NBCNewYork that another shooting occured a couple of blocks away just last week.
