Off-Duty Newark Cop Shoots Armed Robbery Suspect

Authorities say an off-duty Newark police officer shot an armed suspect during a robbery at a restaurant early Tuesday.

Police say the suspect entered the El Bachatipico Restaurant on Summer Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. and announced a robbery.

Police say the officer shot the suspect several times before he fled. Officers located the suspect and took him to a hospital. His condition is not known.

A second suspect remains at large.

Police recovered two weapons at the scene.

Newark Police Director Sam DeMaio says the officer exhibited extreme bravery in warding off two armed suspects.

The name of the officer has not been released.
