Cop on Way to Work Shoots Robber in Newark: Prosecutor

An off-duty Newark police officer shot a robber as he was on his way to work Tuesday night, prosecutors say.

The off-duty cop was in the area of Summer and Sylvan avenues at about 9:30 p.m. when he encountered a robbery in progress, according to the Essex County prosecutor's office.

The cop and two other officers were injured on the scene before the off-duty cop shot 18-year-old Victor Raymonds, the prosecutors' office said.

The officers were taken to University Hospital, where they were treated and released. One of them had a broken arm and the other was injured in the jaw.

Raymonds, who's in stable condition, was charged with robbery, resisting arrest and aggravated assault on police officers.

Prosecutors are still investigating and urge anyone with additional information to call 862-520-3700.
