Newark Man Sentenced in Drive-By Shooting That Killed Cop at Restaurant

A judge has sentenced a Newark man to 60 years in prison for a drive-by shooting that killed an off-duty police officer at a restaurant four years ago.

Rasul McNeil-Thomas had been convicted of numerous crimes including aggravated manslaughter and attempted murder.

Prosecutors say McNeil-Thomas, who was 19 at the time, sprayed bullets into the crowded restaurant and struck Police Officer William Johnson, a 16-year veteran, while he was ordering pizza.

They presented evidence at the trial that McNeil-Thomas was aiming at a group of young women who had been involved in an altercation with his mother and sister earlier that day.

The 45-year-old Johnson was survived by two daughters.

Two other people were wounded in the shooting.
