The head of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said that Newark doesn't have the legal authority to reach an agreement with Uber to let drivers pick up passengers at the Newark Liberty International Airport.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Chairman John Degnan said Thursday that the agency is negotiating with the city over the deal outlined Wednesday that gives Newark $10 million over a decade.
The agency told The Associated Press last week that it had concerns about the deal.
Democratic Newark Mayor Ras Baraka says that the Port Authority doesn't have the authority to get involved. Degnan is a Republican appointed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
Baraka said Wednesday his goal was to protect the safety of Uber riders and require the company pay "its fair share."
