Newark Dad Gets Life Sentence in Toddler's Beating Death

A New Jersey man convicted in the beating death of his 20-month-old daughter has been sentenced to life in prison.

Travis Hartsfield Jr. must serve about 64 years before he becomes eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Monday. He will get credit for time he's already served.

The 28-year-old Newark resident was convicted in October on murder and child endangerment charges stemming from the March 2011 death of his daughter, Asiyah. His first trial ended in a mistrial last year when the jury couldn't reach a verdict

Hartsfield was caring for the toddler when he punched her twice in the stomach because she wouldn't eat. He found her cold and not breathing hours later.

An autopsy determined the girl died from a severed liver caused by blunt force trauma.
