Yonkers Streets, Homes Flooded After Water Main Break

A massive water main break flooded several streets and homes in Yonkers early Monday and left dozens without power, authorities said.

Water began spurting into the roadway at Nepperhan Avenue and Executive Boulevard at about 5 a.m., the Journal News reports. Several roads were shut down near the site of the break, and an exit on the Saw Mill River Parkway at Executive Boulevard was closed while crews worked.

Repairs were completed after nearly 12 hours -- around 3 p.m. -- and power was restored to the 27 customers without power.

Chopper 4 footage from the scene showed large pools of brown water at several neighborhood intersections. A frontage road near the Saw Mill River Parkway looked more like a river than a roadway.

At least one homeowner stacked sandbags in his driveway to prevent water from streaming into a garage, Chopper 4 footage showed. Yonkers Public Works Commissioner Tom Meier said that six other homes flooded. The water level in some of the affected homes' basements was waist-high, he said.

The break remains under investigation and public works crews were working to identify where it broke. Meier said that there are 8-, 12- and 20-inch pipes that are all about 100 years old in the neighborhood.

No injuries were reported.
