Ex-NYC Private School Teacher Convicted of Raping 16-Year-Old Student

A New York City jury has found a former high school math teacher guilty of raping a 16-year-old student in 2011.

Richard Hovan was convicted in state Supreme Court in Manhattan Friday. His attorney says the jury got it wrong and Hovan will appeal.

The 33-year-old Hovan was convicted of five counts of third-degree rape, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual act and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. says Hovan emotionally manipulated his victim, a teenage girl who attended Riverdale Country School, the Bronx private school where he taught.

Prosecutors say Hovan called, texted and emailed the student before finally engaging in sexual intercourse a number of times in his Manhattan apartment in 2011.

The school says it fired Hovan quickly after learning about the allegation in May 2011.

He was in his first year of teaching at the school. Alumni include the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Hovan is scheduled to be sentenced March 24.
