Long Island Man Attacked Baby During Robbery: Police

A suburban New York man is being held on $500,000 bail after police say he injured a baby during a robbery.

Raphael Brown pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Friday on robbery, assault, strangulation and child endangerment charges. He was represented by an attorney from Legal Aid, which does not comment on pending cases.

Police say the 19-year-old Brown attempted to rob a woman working at a laundry in Hempstead at about noon Tuesday. The woman was holding a customer's infant daughter at the time.

Police say Brown choked the woman while ripping a diamond necklace from her neck. He then allegedly pushed the infant and began kicking and stepping on her.

A laundry employee said Friday the child was shaken up. She was treated at a hospital for bruises.
