New York Had a Shark, San Diego's Got Squid

That's a 24-footer right there!

Get your morning scoop on the west coast's squid problem, a littering construction crew, a dreamy teenage celebrity, Beer Wars, and the city's best ice cream sandwiches in today's local blog round-up.

It's quotes like these that leave me thankful for my life free of threatening wild animals: "I just kicked like crazy. The first thing you think of is, 'Oh my gosh, I don't know if I'm going to survive this. If that squid wanted to hurt me, it would have," Shandra Magill told the AP. So basically there are these giant squid with beaks and teeth that are beating up divers around San Diego. Thankfully, New York beaches' only threat right now are friendly, toothless sharks.

An anonymous construction crew dumped a truck-full of garbage onto an old bulkhead by Gerritsen Beach. It's unlikely anyone will be identified, but if you think you have an idea be sure to tell the proper authorities.

Robert Pattinson, the teen poster boy for your teenage daughter's late-night dreams, was in Brooklyn yesterday filming a scene from an upcoming movie. Naturally, a swarm of girls armed with cameras were out to send the dude's face directly back to their Facebook streams. Just a few blocks away, for some hilarious reason related to a filming of his own, Roger Moore looked on and remembered.

The Beer Wars are coming this Monday night to the Bell House in Brooklyn. Tickets are going fast for the indie beer hop off, and at just $20 attendees will get not only their share of independently fused micro-brews but a cheese pairing as well. Presented in part by Brooklyn Based.

And since it's summer, we'd like to take this moment to remind all you ice cream lovers out there that this fine city of ours is home to a slew of delicious ice cream sandwich specialists. Just last summer, Serious Eats compiled their top ten, and now that the rain is gone that's definitely worth revisiting.
