Former New York Gov. David Paterson, Wife Divorcing

The couple separated in 2012

Former New York Gov. David Paterson and his wife have officially filed for divorce, more than a year after saying they were separating.

A representative for the Democratic former governor said Tuesday that he and Michelle Paige Paterson have already finalized the terms. She didn't immediately return a call to her office.

Divorce papers were filed in Manhattan last week. The Patersons separated in September 2012, calling the decision "mutual and amicable."

They remain friendly. Paterson's rep, Sean Darcy, says they dined together with their children Jan. 12.

Then-Lt. Gov. Paterson became governor when Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal in 2008.

The Patersons soon held a news conference at which both said they'd had affairs.

Spitzer and his wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, announced they were splitting last month.
