NYC to Send 1M Condoms to Puerto Rico in Zika Fight

New York City is sending a million condoms to Puerto Rico for Zika prevention efforts.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says the condoms will be distributed by the Puerto Rico Department of Health throughout the island.

Officials say Puerto Rico has 474 cases of locally transmitted Zika virus. That's more than any other state or territory in the United States.

The effort is part of the New York City Health Department's ongoing condom distribution program. New York has distributed more than 340 million since the program began in 2007. That's more than 105,000 every day.

Zika is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. But a growing number of cases in the world have occurred through sexual transmission.
