More NYC Schools to Use Solar Power

Students will track the amount of emissions that have been offset

New York City will be using more solar energy to power schools.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday that his administration will devote resources for 24 schools to install solar panels over the next two years.

Students will track the amount of emissions that have been offset.

Currently nine schools use solar energy.

De Blasio spoke at the Bronx's Kennedy High School, which gets 5 percent of its power from the sun.

The Democratic mayor, who took office in January, is committed to making the Big Apple greener.

He announced last week that he wants to reduce the city's greenhouse gases by 80 percent by 2050.

He also appeared next to Al Gore in a massive climate march in Manhattan and addressed the United Nations on the topic.
