NYC Closing 3 Charter Schools at End of June

New York City education officials will close three low-performing charter schools at the end of this school year.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina says Friday the three schools were given benchmarks for improvement and failed to meet them.

The schools are Lefferts Garden Charter School and Beginning With Children Charter School in Brooklyn and Staten Island Community Charter School on Staten Island.

The schools struggled with low scores on statewide math and English tests. Other problems included high suspension rates and underenrollment.

The charters of all three were up for renewal in June.

The Department of Education says it will work with families at the three schools to help students enroll in a different school for the 2016-2017 school year.
