New York Buildings Shine in Solidarity With Orlando

The rainbow flag dotted the New York skyline Sunday night as buildings used their lights and spires to show support for the LGBT community in the wake of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history at an Orlando, Florida, gay club.

The spires of One World Trade Center in lower Manhattan and the Bank of America Tower at the foot of Bryant Park in midtown shined in rainbow colors. The spire atop the Empire State Building on 34th Street went completely dark in a show of solidarity.

At street level, candles, rainbow flags and bundles of flowers, had been placed in front of the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar that became a symbol of gay rights after a 1969 police raid led to a violent street riot.

Pockets of NYPD officers, some armed with automatic weapons, stood nearby. There was a heavy police presence outside a number of gay bars and businesses Sunday night following the targeted attack in Florida.
