New Jersey Man Was Drunk When He Struck Rutgers Student: Prosecutors

Assault by auto charges have been filed against a man who authorities say was driving drunk when he allegedly struck and injured a Rutgers University student earlier this year.

Middlesex County prosecutors say Michael Schenck, of Franklin Township, also faces aggravated assault and DWI charges stemming from the Oct. 4 accident in New Brunswick. He was arrested Monday and released after posting $50,000 bail.

Prosecutors say the 30-year-old Schenck struck 20-year-old Timmy McDonnell as he was trying to cross Easton Avenue. McDonnell, a Holmdel Township resident, was severely injured in the accident and remains hospitalized.

Following the crash, more than 100 Rutgers University students camped out daily at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and Medical Center in New Brunswick to keep vigil over McDonnell.

A telephone number for Schenck could not be located Tuesday.
