NJ Man Sentenced in Deadly Birthday Party Shooting

State prosecutors say a northern New Jersey man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing one man and injuring another at a birthday party.

The Somerset County prosecutor says 21-year-old Alex Ortega of Plainfield fired several shots at the party in Franklin Township where he was the DJ in 2010.

Ortega admitted to shooting two 18-year-olds after a fight broke out between groups from Plainfield and Somerset.

Ortega pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, aggravated assault and weapons charges.

Ortega must serve at least 17 years before he is eligible for parole.

Ortega will also serve three years for his involvement in a prison fight where he seriously injured an inmate and swung a fist at a security guard.
