A New Jersey man was killed early Saturday morning when his car drove over a cliff, falling 75 to 100 feet, police said.

Just before 3 a.m. police received several calls reporting that a car had driven off Gorge Road in Edgewater and gone over a cliff. Nearby residents reported hearing a loud thud when the car landed below.

The maroon 2006 GMC SUV came to rest on the rear patio of an apartment complex on Thompson Lane. The 37-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

Police said the driver was a resident of Fairview. His identity has not been released, pending family notification.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
