Fake Cop Arrested After Pulling Over Off-Duty NJ State Trooper: Officials

The 25-year-old man pulled over the trooper in Pohatcong and had a placard with the logos of both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania state police

A New Jersey man is facing police impersonation charges after authorities said he pulled over an off-duty state trooper.

The man, 25, was cuffed after attempting to stop the off-duty trooper on Interstate 78 in Pohatcong Thursday evening, according to police.

Authorities said the trooper was headed west on the interstate when the man’s white Jeep pulled up behind him and turned on blue emergency lights and flashed a New Jersey State Police decal.

The trooper caught on to the ruse after several minutes and called state police, who sent an officer to stop the Jeep.

When police caught up with the impersonator, authorities say, they found a placard with the New Jersey State Police logo on one side and the insignia of the Pennsylvania State Police on the other.

Authorities say the man was stopped just a mile from the border of the Garden and Keystone states.

The man is charged with impersonating a public servant. He was released pending a court appearance.

“The moral of the story is don’t try to stop cars if you’re not a cop, and don’t stop for white, Jeep Grand Cherokees,” the New Jersey State Police said in a Facebook post. “Call 911 instead.”
