1 Teen Boy Killed, 1 Flung Onto Highway in Jersey City Hit-Run: Officials

One teenage boy was killed and another was seriously injured when a car plowed into the bike they were riding in Jersey City Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said the force of the impact was so great that one of the boys was flung over a fence on the elevated roadway on Terrace Avenue and onto a highway below. That boy survived but is in critical condition; his 15-year-old companion was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The car that hit them, meanwhile, had a badly smashed-in front end afterward. The vehicle continued down the roadway another 200 yards or so before police stopped the vehicle.

The driver ran away and was still at large as of 11 p.m. Two passengers in the vehicle were detained, but it's not clear if they will face charges.

Police crews remained at the scene late into Wednesday evening and could be seen going door to door looking for the suspect and searching throughout the neighborhood with police dogs.

The boys' classmates at William L. Dickinson High School were also at the scene and could be seen hugging one another and crying as they looked on the police tape and twisted metal heap of that was the bike they were riding together.

"It's completely heartbreaking," said friend Ethan Ramos.
