Northern NJ Town May Outlaw Bullying

Ridgefield, N.J., would become the first town in the state to outlaw bullying if ordinance passes.

A northern New Jersey town might become the first in the state to outlaw bullying.

Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez has asked the borough attorney to craft an ordinance that would prevent bullying and harassment in recreational sports, at the library and on municipal property.

Suarez tells The Record newspaper the ordinance would tell parents how to report bullying and make it easier to deal with such issues.

New Jersey's anti-bullying law that was implemented in September requires schools to investigate any bullying incident that is reported.

Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers student who committed suicide after his roommate allegedly broadcast his gay sexual encounter via webcam, was a native of Ridgewood.
