Police in Rockland County say they found a woman dead and a 7-year-old girl with several stab wounds after the girl's father called to report a possible suicide.
Clarkstown police said they were called Thursday afternoon to a home in New City. There, they found 45-year-old Victoria Vovchik dead from her stab wounds and her young daughter also stabbed and in critical condition.
Police believe Vovchik thought she'd killed her daughter, then turned the knife on herself. The girl was taken to Westchester Medical Center.
The girl's father made the discovery and called 911, according to police.

"It's a shock and a horror to the whole community," said neighbor Marcy Becker.
Residents near the home on Quarry Drive said Vovchik, a podiatrist with offices in New Jersey, seemed to be a loving mother.
"They seemed like very nice people, and she had a cute daughter. They came over for trick-or-treating," said Jaimini Amin.
The girl liked to play basketball, according to neighbor Sherry Rothstein.
"I'm hoping that she pulls through," she said.
Investigation is ongoing.
