New Brunswick Suspends Utility Employees in Criminal Probe

The city of New Brunswick suspended two employees of its local water utility as part of a criminal investigation, the city said Saturday.

In a brief statement, the city said it has been working with the state on an "ongoing criminal investigation," and as part of that probe the two men were suspended without pay. It did not describe the nature of the investigation.

One of the men, William Ortiz, faces criminal charges of bribery and official misconduct. The other, Joseph DeBonis, faces charges of tampering with public records and official misconduct.

It was not clear if either man yet had an attorney.
