New research has found that nearly a quarter of young adults in New York City have a body piercing somewhere other than an earlobe.
The New York Post reported on the city Health Department's findings Monday. The agency found that 21 percent of 25-to-44-year-olds are pierced with jewelry. That compares to 14 percent of all adults in the city.
Health officials did a phone survey on piercings while studying the transmission of blood-borne diseases.
By law, body artists must have a two-year operating license and get trained on how to prevent the spread of infections.
The Post says that jewelry made from gold, titanium and surgical steel reduces the risk of infection.
