NYPD Taking Longer to Respond to Serious Crimes

New York City police are getting slower when it comes to responding to serious crimes.
    
More than half of the city's 75 precincts took longer to respond to "critical'' calls last year than they did in 2007, according to NYPD data.
    
Although many precincts saw only slight increases, others had more significant spikes in average response time, including a 42-second increase at the 100th Precinct in Queens, and a 38-second hike at Manhattan's 13th Precinct on the East Side.
    
Average citywide response times rose by 4 seconds to 4 minutes and 10 seconds. Response times in Staten Island decreased an average 7 seconds, but its precincts had among the city's slowest response times in the city at over 5 minutes.
    
Police spokesman Paul Browne acknowledged the slower response times but says they're significantly better than a decade ago.
