NYPD Staked Out in Staten Island Neighborhood Where Boy Was Stabbed Walking to School

Police are continuing to look for the stranger who stabbed a 9-year-old boy walking to school on Staten Island last Friday as frightened parents wondered how a child could be targeted so violently.

NYPD officers canvassed the Mariners Harbor neighborhood, handing out wanted flyers Monday after Jermaine Culver was stabbed in the neck, arm and head near Union and Leyden avenues while walking to PS 22 Friday morning.

Surveillance video showed the boy walking while an unidentified stranger followed, then attacked him before running away.

The boy managed to run home. He was taken to the hospital and received stitches. He was released from the hospital Monday.

Parents picking up their children from school Monday said it's been years since violence touched the neighborhood.

"Once maybe in a 20-year time, this has never happened before," said one woman.

Police are keeping a mobile command center in the area indefinitely. They're hoping to generate leads that result in an arrest.

Family members have said Jermain is the "happiest, nicest kid there is."
