Authorities say police officers shot and wounded a man who was pointing a gun at them on Staten Island.

The Staten Island Advance reports the officers approached the man shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday in Port Richmond.

He had apparently matched a description of a suspect in a home invasion.

Authorities say that when the officers tried to question the man, he fled. When the officers pursued the man, he then turned and pointed a handgun. The officers fired three shots, hitting the man in the torso.

He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. One of the officers was treated for a knee injury and the other for tinnitus from the gunshot sounds.

Authorities recovered a gun and ammunition at the scene.
