NYPD Officers Rescue 2 Girls Off Far Rockaway Beach

Four NYPD officers rescued two teenage girls who got swept up by a current in the waters off Far Rockaway Tuesday evening, the police department said.

Police got a 911 call at about 6:30 p.m. for a report of two girls drowning off Beach 17th Street, according to the NYPD. Four of the officers who responded saw the girls, along with another man, struggling to stay above water.

The officers took off their gun belts, shirts and protective vests, and dove into the water, police said. They fought the current to get to the girls, who were about 50 feet out, and the man, who was about 30 feet out.

The officers were able to bring the swimmers back to shore safely, the NYPD said.

The girls, ages 14 and 15, were taken to St. John's Hospital, where they were checked out and released.

The man, who had gone into the water to try to help the teenagers when he saw they were in trouble, refused medical treatment at the scene.
