New York City One of the Worst Places to Live in America: Report

New York City beat out Fresno, California, for the spot of 96th best place to live in the country in U.S. News and World Report’s evaluation of the 100 most populous cities.

That’s right: the Big Apple is less desire able than places like Detroit, Baltimore, Birmingham, Alabama, and  Jackson, Mississippi, according to the report.

Also ahead of New York City were Albany (No. 36), Syracuse (No. 53),  Buffalo (No. 57) and Rochester (No. 60).

The magazine surveyed the 100 most populous cities in the country, rating them based on factors like job market index, quality of life index and net migration.

Only Calfornia's Fresno, Stockton and Modesto, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, scored lower than New York.

The report then pointed out common gripes about living in the city.

“Affordable housing is an ongoing problem in New York City, with one-bedroom apartments renting for several thousand dollars a month,” the report reads.

“Traffic delays at…bridges and tunnels are common, especially during peak rush hours. While street parking is available, it is often very difficult to find, and parking garages can be expensive. In short, a car simply isn't your best option,” the report continued.

If the parking and cost of housing in New York are impossible to cope with, maybe consider living in the top five on the list: Denver; Austin, Texas; Fayetteville, Arkansas; the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina; or Colorado Springs, Colorado.
