Violent Night in New York City; At Least 8 Shot: Police

Gunfire erupted across a muggy New York City Sunday night in a series of shootings that spanned from upper Manhattan down to Staten Island, police said.

At least eight people were shot in four of the city’s five boroughs in a span of only a couple hours. The wave of violence came just hours after a young man was shot at a Brooklyn playground.

The 20-year-old man was shot three times shortly before 2:45 p.m. as he played basketball at El Shabazz Playground in Bedford-Stuyvesant, according to police. He was taken to Kings County Hospital and is expected to survive.

A 19-year-old man was shot in his neck around 8:30 p.m. in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, police said. He was transported to Brookdale Hospital and is expected to survive.

About an hour later, shots rang out at the Thomas Jefferson Houses in East Harlem. Police said a man was shot in his stomach after a fight near East 111th Street and First Avenue shortly before 9:30 p.m. He was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition.

Two women and one man were shot near 118th Avenue and 155th Street in South Jamaica, Queens, shortly before 10:45 p.m. The FDNY said that all three victims were taken to Jamaica Hospital with gunshot wounds. Their conditions weren’t immediately known.

Minutes later, two more people were shot in the Richmond Hill section of Queens, police said. The men were shot near 110th Street and Atlantic Avenue shortly before 11:15 p.m. One of the men was shot in his leg and the other man was shot in his torso. Both of them were taken to Jamaica Hospital and are in stable condition.

Around the same time as the shooting in Richmond Hill, a man was shot as he sat in a parked car on Staten Island. Police said the 25-year-old man was parked on Prince Avenue in Fox Hills shortly before 11:15 p.m. when an unknown man came up and shot at him. It’s unclear how many times the shooter fired, but one bullet hit the man in his head. He was taken to Richmond University in critical condition.

No arrests have been made in any of the shootings, police said.

Early Sunday morning, a 19-year-old man was shot and killed on a Bronx street. And three men were shot during barbecues at a Bronx park late Saturday night.
