Transit officials are taking aim at trash on New York City subway tracks.
The MTA announced a new cleanup program Friday. CEO Thomas Prendergast notes that getting debris off the tracks reduces the risk of fires and delays.
The "Operation Track Sweep" program includes cleaning tracks in 94 stations every two weeks, up from 34. That started in June.
And in September, more than 500 workers will fan out to rid tracks of rubbish in all 469 New York subway stations over a two-week period.
New, portable track vacuums are being developed, with prototypes due late this year.
Also, three powerful new vacuum trains are scheduled to arrive over the next two years, and the MTA is buying 27 new trash-hauling cars.
