NYC Public Housing to Get $300 Million to Fix Leaky Roofs

New York City's public housing complexes will be getting $300 million in roof repairs in an effort to combat mold and wood rot in many of the buildings, city officials announced Saturday.

Roof replacement is slated to begin next month and will cover 66 buildings during the first year of the three-year project. Those improvements will benefit nearly 13,000 residents, officials said.

Buildings scheduled for repairs during the year of the project have the most repair requests for leaks and mold of all units managed by the New York City Housing Authority.

"Years of federal and state disinvestment have led to deteriorating buildings, depriving tenants of the level of housing they deserve," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in announcing the project.

Exposure to mold can lead to asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
