Woman Crashes Into Cars Repeatedly, Then Backs Into Chabad School

An out-of-control SUV repeatedly crashed into six others vehicles before barreling into a Hebrew school after an elderly driver suffered a medical emergency in Manhattan, police said.

It was chaos on East 20th Street in Gramercy Park when the black Jeep seemingly flew out of control Wednesday and hit six other cars.

Kerry Cosgriff said he was rear-ended at a red light.

“The lady behind us seemed like she went crazy. She plowed into the guy in front of us, put it in reverse, hit another car. I thought she was getting chased by somebody,” Kerry Cosgriff said.

Police are looking into whether the elderly woman driving the Jeep might have been disoriented from a medical emergency. Witnesses say she kept hitting the gas and then reversing, slamming into cars over, and over, and over again.

“I hear boom, boom, boom, boom, one after the other. Car after car just hit each other,” Melissa Gonzales said.

Bystanders gathered to watch the frenzied scene unfold with one car after the next crippled by the SUV’s impact.

“I told the guy behind me, ‘Get out of your car.’ I was going to run, I didn’t know what was going on,” Cosgriff said.

The chaos finally ended when the elderly driver backed her SUV right through the front gate of Chabad of Gramercy Park. The vehicle stopped before crashing through the front door of the school.

Despite the debris strewn up and down the street, the only person hurt was the elderly driver, who suffered minor injuries. It wasn't immediately clear if she would face any charges.

The other six drivers, including Henry Vujelk, are left with repairs that will cost hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars, to fix.

“My car’s on the sidewalk, and I was wondering why’s my car on the sidewalk,” Vujelk said. “I don’t know what happened here.”
